Boulder City, Nevada

Roger and I took an 18-day road trip in August 2023. We traveled from Oro Valley, Arizona through southern Nevada to California to visit family, and friends, and take in a few sights along the way! I'll be sharing a few of our stops separately on my blog.

One of our stops along the way was Boulder City, located in Clark County, southeastern Nevada. The city overlooks Lake Mead, which is impounded by the Hoover Dam. Boulder City lies above the Black and Boulder canyons of the Colorado River on the Nevada-Arizona border.

We visited the Boulder Dam Museum which shared a wealth of information about the early days of Boulder City. We learned that from 1931 to 1935, during the construction of the Hoover Dam, Boulder City housed more than 4,000 workers in 1,500 buildings. After the dam was completed most of the workers left, and Boulder City became a federally administered headquarters for several agencies involved in the dam’s operation. In 1958, the federal government ceded the townsite, then about 33 square miles to Boulder City’s residents.

Downtown Boulder City was constructed in the early 1930s. Decades later, the early buildings and their architectural style remain. Boulder City's Historic District has over 400 vintage structures and many local-owned shops, restaurants, and art along the streets and galleries, making it a great place to spend some time browsing. Large, beautiful parks are just a block or two away where we graciously took a break under the shade trees. One thing you won't find in Boulder City is slot machines. The city has never allowed gaming and is one of only two Nevada cities that do not have gambling. The other is Panaca.

Summing it up with a collage.
